James (Jim) Sherrell - 3rd Class Petty Officer and husband of Irene Chambless Sherrell, was a 8 inch gun loader on the USS San Francisco, a heavy cruiser. He was stationed in Pearl Harbor on December 7 1941, day of the Japanese attacks and was part of some of the following battles in the Pacific between the US and the Japanese. He and a shipmate reported torpedoes advancing toward the USS San Francisco in time for it to turn and be missed but the torpedoes hit and sank the Juneau Alaska. Jim had to have emergency surgery during some point in the war but it was sometime after the death of Rear Admiral Callaghan. I understood it to be not from a wound but the physical stress of fighting the battles that caused the damage. Maybe Jim's daughter Kristie, one of our users can give more information someday. Read more about it at Wikipedia. This is a cellphone picture of a framed photo of him hanging on the wall at his home. Jim is 89 years old.
