Welcome to the Limrock Caver's group. Limrock has at least 6 caves, 2 of which are visited by cavers from all over the US on a regular basis. We are looking forward to your contributions to this group.

Stephens Cave

This is not the same as Stephens Gap Cave. It is located near the end of county road 80 also known as Schiffmans or Shippmans Cove. There's a nearby cave called Pockrus Cave but I think it's further off the road. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. This cave is only about 30 feet from the road. It used to be designated as a fallout shelter but now it has a no trespassing sign near the opening.

Stephens Gap parking

This is on the side of county road 30 a stones throw to the left of the old gravel pit. There's at least a couple of trails, one is a gravel trail off to the right and the other a mowed grass trail off to the left. I'm betting the grass trail is the one that leads to the cave. I'll have to make the hike to be sure.

Stephens Gap - HWY 35 connect to County Road 30

HWY 35 is where the truck is pulling out on to. The little connecting stretch of road is considered part of County Road 30. I'm standing on County Road 30 near where cars park to go to Stephens Gap Cave. There used to be a rock crusher business between the roads. You can see where they had it set up. There's a huge gravel pit behind me but you can't see it from the road.

Dirt and gravel road on the way to Blowing Cave

This is what the road looks like going up the mountain after the paved portion of county road 119 ends. You have to travel about a 100 yards or so up it to get to the cave parking area.

The narrow trail leading to the cave is on the other side and slightly to the right of the shack from this perspective. You cross a deep ditch which is also on the other side of the shack.

Update 7/24/10 You can now check the map in the upper right on this page to see an approximate location.

Blowing Cave in Limrock

Entrance to the Blowing Cave in Limrock. I hadn't been there in years and had to hunt for it. The cave is off of county road 119 also known as Gentle's cove. The paved portion of the road ends at the foot of the mountain. It then becomes a one lane dirt and gravel road. You go 100 yards or so up the gravel road part and there's a parking space off to your right down a fairly steep hill.

Alabama Sierra Club visits Stephens Gap Cave in Limrock

See video

From alexcomp99 at Youtube.

"Alabama Sierra Club visits a local cave after a state, executive committee meeting at Goose Pond Colony near Scottsboro, Alabama. The cave is emphatically, NOT COMMERCIAL, and not easy to get to. We hiked in over a mile over a flowing creek bed as it had recently rained. Slippery footing and mostly uphill. Not everyone in our group was able to handle the access as there were portions where hands and knees work and careful plotting of the next footstep was necessary. The ones who made it were treated to a special scene in the huge cavern chamber with two separate waterfalls dropping over 100 feet and some spectacular lighting effects as the sunshine proceeded from above. Memorable!"
